Experience &
Interests

Ayse P. Gurses is an assistant professor at the Human Factors and Technology Research Program of the University of Maryland School of Medicine. She received a Ph.D. in Industrial and Systems Engineering at the University Wisconsin-Madison in 2005. In 2004, she has been awarded a Health Services Research Dissertation Grant (total direct costs awarded $30,000) from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality for her dissertation research titled “Performance obstacles and facilitators, workload, quality of working life, and quality and safety of care among intensive care nurses”. Her research interests include human factors engineering and patient safety, information technology in health care, quality management, and quality engineering. Her current research focus is on the following two areas: (1) use of information technology to improve communication and collaborative work in health care settings, and (2) impact of the work system on quality and safety of care and quality of working life among care providers.
