Dr. Xiao directs research in
patient safety as part of Program in Trauma. His research interests include
team performance, video-based performance measures and education,
coordination studies, asynchronous communication and computer supported
cooperative work. He is also Associate Director for Research, Center for
Advancement in Patient Safety at University of Maryland, as part of University of Maryland Medical Center.
Dr. Xiao is principal investigator of three consortium projects funded by
National Science Foundation on coordination in mission-critical settings. He
consulted for Nortel Networks, GE Medical Systems, and Aethon. His previous
research was sponsored by Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, NASA,
and Army Research Institute, and National Patient Safety Foundation. He
published nearly 50 journal articles and over 100 conference proceeding
articles. His recent publications are in Critical Care Medicine, Anesthesia
& Analgesia, Journal of America Medical Informatics Association, Annals
of Emergency Medicine, Journal of Trauma, Management Science and
Administrative Science Quarterly.
Dr. Xiao is associate editor for Human Factors and IEEE Transactions on
Systems, Man, & Cybernetics, Part A. He also reviews for Journal of
Biomedical Informatics, Critical Care Medcine, Safety Science, Ergonomics,
and Anesthesia & Analgesia. He has been on review panels for the federal
agencies such as National Science Foundation, NASA, and Department of
Defense.
