Large Scale Collaboration: A Project of Coordination Studies

Supporting Rapid Transfer of Information and Responsibility

Communication in acute care is challenged by handoffs, time pressure, and information overload. The project is to (1) understand communication as it occurs in ICU environment with the use of different artifacts and (2) design concepts and prototypes of computerized supporting tools to enhance communication.

Research Approaches

Prototyping graphic displays to improve access to information at different levels (by patients, roles, and overall unit status) and to highlight changes made. The existing computer tools will be used as a starting point (e.g., Excel file – RoundOptimizer and Virtual PICU database).
Technology trials with flat panel displays and desktop programs to show graphically information used during rounds, follow-up (e.g., daily goals) and unit management.
Evaluation study on user satisfaction, usage patterns, and possibly clinical outcomes.

We wish to thank the many PICU team members for their contributions and feedback thus far.
